The Greater Reading Chinese Church remains small with about 20 people worshiping each week. In addition to their small size, the members of the group do not have a long Christian Heritage. Please pray that the Lord will work in the hearts of these first-generation Christians, and that they will grow in their understanding of the gospel. Four new people came to both Bible study and worship recently and asked for English Bibles. They are recent college graduates teaching English for one year before returning to China. Pray that they will attend regularly and will be both blessed by the group and be a blessing to it. Pray too that the Lord will give Pastor Jonathan Peters wisdom to effectively minister cross-culturally.
Pastor Christopher Chelpka has been actively using the Internet for outreach. Covenant OPC’s Facebook page is used to keep people informed. He made ten contacts by offering free ESV Bibles on Craigslist. Sermons are posted on Sermon Audio.com, so they may be heard by people getting to know Covenant OPC. There have been some obstacles to a Bible study at the University of Arizona, but plans are being made for the fall semester. Please pray that God will open doors for a Bible study to be held on the university campus. Praise the Lord that three covenant children are taking a communicate membership class. Pray that more people will attend the evening worship service.
Pastor Everett Henes had the opportunity to officiate the wedding of two recent graduates of Hillsdale College who have been part of Hillsdale OPC since their freshman year. The facility used for worship is lacking a nursery and Sunday school space, and worship cannot always be held in the same room. A committee to investigate other facilities has been formed. Everett attended an RTS course on campus ministry and church planting. Once a month the congregation assembles for a big meal and a Bible study after the morning service, instead of having an evening worship service. God has added new members. 26 people including 14 visitors from the community attended a summer community Bible study. This was combined with a once-per-week VBS. Praise
As the school year starts again, so do catechism classes at Providence OPC. Pastor John Hilbelink reports that officer-training classes were recently completed. Pray that God will bless those who participated in the class and raise up officers to lead his church in Rockford. Praise God that two covenant children were recently baptized, and one person was received on reaffirmation of faith. Give thanks for visitors who continue to come to worship, including some who attend regularly. Pray that God will bless activities such as the women’s Bible study as they begin again after a summer break. Pray, too, that the congregation will be a blessing as it continues to minister to a man who is in prison.
Pastor Drew Adcock reports that Omega OPC recently held its first big outreach event, a pancake breakfast. The turnout was not as large as hoped but two visitors returned for Sunday worship, with one indicating that she plans to attend regularly. The Adcocks hosted a 4th of July picnic for the church where many members enjoyed good fellowship. Pray that the Lord will bring new families to worship at Omega. The Pajama Factory, where Omega rents space will be holding “First Friday” arts events. Pray that Omega will be able to connect with those who attend these events.
